Ávila will always be associated with the image of its city walls. Visible from far away, they are among the best-preserved and most complete in Europe. Avila Cathedral

The oldest Spanish Gothic cathedral. Construction was originally begun in the Romanesque style, but the project was subsequently taken over by the master architect Fruchel, who built one of the first Gothic cathedrals in Spain.

Avila City Walls

The walled enclosure dates back to the Middle Ages. The wall controlled the entrance of provisions and merchandise, and also isolated the city, guarding it against the potential outbreak of a plague or epidemic, in addition to its obvious defensive function.

San Vicente Basilica

Founded in the 11th century, it was not finished until two centuries later. It mixes Romanesque elements with other Gothic ones. The basilica of San Vicente was built outside the walls of the town. Its foundation dates from the 11th century and is dedicated to San Vicente and his sisters Cristeta and Sabina. Building was begun in the Romanesque style, and was finished later according to the Gothic canons. Maestro Fruchel participated in is construction. The interior has vaults with ogives on a Romanesque structure. A crypt is dedicated to the Virgen de la Soterraña.

Avila Provincial Museum

The Casa de los Deanes house and the church of Santo Tomé are part of the cultural site in Plaza de Nalvillos square in the city of Avila, dedicated to collecting cultural materials from around the region. The Casa de los Deanes is a 16th-century Renaissance palace housing a permanent exhibition arranged in three sections: the first explores Avila's rural culture through its traditional arts and activities; the second section presents an overview of the province's history from prehistoric times to the 19th century; and the section on the city features archaeological elements found in urban excavations.
